BSN Frequently Asked Questions

What are the residency requirements for the School of Nursing?

Please review the SON Admission Policy for information regarding residency requirements.

What is Freshman Early-Entry? Who is eligible?

The Freshman Early-Entry (FEE) pathway, available exclusively at UMMC’s Jackson campus, offers first-time freshmen at four partnering institutions the opportunity to secure early admission to the Traditional BSN program. It is the only pathway that considers a student’s high school GPA for admission. FEE students bypass the more competitive selection process typically required after completing pre-nursing coursework. Partnering schools include the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Millsaps College, and Tougaloo College.

Is there an entrance exam required for your undergraduate programs?

No entrance exam is required for admission into the UMMC School of Nursing.

What are the ACT requirements?

FEE applicants must have a minimum ACT superscore of 25

Traditional entry into our pre-licensure nursing programs does not have a minimum ACT superscore requirement. If the ACT/SAT has not been taken, students may still apply. However, applicants who have completed the ACT/SAT are asked to submit their score(s) for documentation purposes. Applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in another field or are licensed RNs do not need to submit an ACT/SAT score. This score is not utilized in the admission process.

Residual ACT scores are accepted.

For more information about this, please contact the Office of Enrollment Management. Scores on transcripts are considered unofficial and will not be accepted.

What are the GPA requirements?

The Traditional BSN program requires a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5. The student’s science prerequisite GPA will also be considered for admission. All GPAs are based on a 4.0 scale.

How many students are accepted?

The number of students accepted differs from application cycle to application cycle depending on the number of qualified applicants, the number of available faculty, the number of available clinical sites and preceptors, etc.

When is the deadline to apply?

The deadline for the Traditional BSN program is December 15.

How many times a year do you admit students?

All Traditional BSN students are admitted in the summer.

What classes do I need to take before starting nursing school?

There are 62 hours of prerequisites. These can be taken at a regionally accredited college or community college of your choice and usually take at least two years to complete. All prerequisites must be finished prior to starting nursing school.

SON Prerequisites

Note: At least two science prerequisites must be successfully completed with a minimum grade of C and a minimum 2.0 GPA posted prior to the program application deadline.

Is it possible for a student to have a job while enrolled in the Traditional or Accelerated BSN program?

All students admitted into the Traditional BSN program are admitted on a full-time status, with the exception of their first semester, which is a 7-hour semester. Typically, classes for the Traditional BSN program are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. While the schedule varies daily, due to the program's intensity, students are discouraged from taking on additional work responsibilities while enrolled in this program. At the beginning of each semester, students in the BSN program receive a course calendar outlining their schedule for the semester. Students who must work to help with financial obligations are encouraged to speak with their faculty advisor before taking on additional responsibility.

Does UMMC School of Nursing offer scholarships/financial aid?

Yes, both are available to qualified students who apply.
